The Serious Nature of the Link Between Smuggling and Organised Crime

Abstract

This study examines the gravity of the intertwined relationship between the crime of smuggling and cross-border organised crime, and the ways in which it poses a direct threat to states’ security and their political and economic stability. The research problem lies in identifying the forms of this interconnection and its implications, as smuggling is no longer merely an individual criminal act, but has become a logistical and financial pillar relied upon by organised crime networks for the trafficking of drugs, weapons and human beings, as well as for laundering their substantial proceeds through money-laundering operations. The study concluded that this criminal alliance contributes to the erosion of border sovereignty, the depletion of the national economy and the weakening of security institutions. It has therefore become essential to formulate comprehensive security and legal strategies, whilst strengthening international and regional cooperation and activating information-sharing mechanisms to counter this cross-border threat.
